What is Service-Learning at Gwynedd Mercy?

Service-Learning is a method of teaching, learning, and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community. Sr. Patricia Donlin incorporates the learning objectives within the Junior Theology curriculum. Service-Learning is also recognized as a high-impact educational practice that can enhance both teaching and learning experiences. This program enables the GMAHS students to live out our Mercy values.

Who participates in Service-Learning?

Junior students are required to complete at least 15 hours of direct service at an agency or site that aligns with one of the five Critical Concerns of Mercy: Earth, Immigration, Non-Violence, Racism, or Women.

  • These hours must be completed by March 31, 2024.

  • Students are required to track their hours.

  • Students are required to participate in at least three reflection groups.

  • After each service opportunity, students are to complete a reflection through their service-learning journal.

  • Students are also required to do at least 5 hours of advocacy work on a particular issue, related to the agency or site where they completed their service hours.

  • These 20 service hours are a GMAHS Graduation Requirement.
